Update
GEORGE NEWS - The investigation into the death of Sivuyile Mkhoncele (39), the man who was gunned down in peak traffic last Wednesday morning, 24 February, continues and no arrests have yet been made.
This was confirmed by Southern Cape police spokesperson, Sgt Chris Spies, on Tuesday 2 March.
"The motive for the attack is yet to be determined. However, all possibilities are being investigated. The suspects are yet to be arrested," Spies said.
Mkhoncele was shot and killed in his car, a white Audi with a CA registration number, while waiting in peak traffic near the Thembalethu bridge in Nelson Mandela Boulevard. At around 07:20, several unidentified men surrounded his car and opened fire. Two passengers, a woman and a child, who were also in the car, are unharmed.
According to an eyewitness George Herald spoke to on the scene, he saw at least six men approaching the road from the direction of Zone 9.
Knowledgeable sources told George Herald that the murder could possibly be related to recent incidents of extortion that have been taking place in the area.
Anyone with information that could lead to an arrest is asked to contact the Thembalethu detective branch on 044 802 8950 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
