GEORGE NEWS - The Garden Route SPCA and Barnyard Donkey Sanctuary were inundated with pets during evacuations.
SPCA senior inspector Salome Bruyns said they were full to double capacity. As the fire spread east, pets in George were returned to areas that were declared safe so that they could make space for animals from Karatara, Rheenendal and Franskraal.
Food was also taken to the Knysna Animal Welfare Society to cater for the increased intake of pets.
The donkey sanctuary manager, Sasha Hattingh, said they took in 173 cats and dogs during evacuations in George on Monday. By Tuesday, half of these had gone home and they started taking in animals from Karatara.
