GEORGE NEWS - Young people from Lawaaikamp have taken a stand against gangsterism in their community after a series of attacks were carried out, allegedly by gangs, on innocent people.
The youth called a meeting on Monday 17 February at the Lawaaikamp Community Hall to address some of these challenges.
Community elders and the ward councillor (Ward 7), Shaeed Rooiland, also attended the meeting.
At this meeting two recent incidents were highlighted. Two elderly males were allegedly attacked by gangsters near their homes with one man being stabbed in his stomach and the other's fingers chopped off.
The police have confirmed one of these incidents, saying Conville detectives are investigating a case of assault with the intent to commit grievous bodily harm following an incident in Charlie Hugo Street on 16 February, where a 60-year-old man was found with an open wound on his stomach.
"The victim was taken to hospital where he is still receiving medical attention," said Sergeant Christopher Spies, Southern Cape police communications officer.
"Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation and the public is requested to come forward with any information that could assist the police with the investigation."
Anyone with information may contact the investigation officer, Constable Jaymee Lucas, at 044 803 3300.
Spies said there was no information about the other suspect.
Zandile Komami, the organiser of the gathering, said they have called the meeting to voice their concerns and to take action against gangsterism in their community.
"We condemn these barbaric attacks. We are tired of being victimised in our own communities. We no longer feel safe and we want this to end," she said.
