Update
GEORGE NEWS - Council started off on a rough note with the appointment of an acting speaker to chair the meeting. This was necessary since the Speaker, Iona Kritzinger, resigned on 20 December last year.
Municipal Manager Trevor Botha requested that this take place on an item to elect the speaker of council. The opposition is having a field day questioning the legal adviser and municipal manager of council on this matter.
They argue that if an acting speaker is elected on this item, the person might refuse to vacate the position.
An acting speaker is necessary to chair a council meeting.
