GEORGE NEWS - Joining forces to help animals, the Garden Route SPCA (GRSPCA) and Hoekwil Humane Society (HHS) held an outreach in Touwsranten on Saturday 13 November.
According to Bruno MacDonald of HHS, residents of the community near Hoekwil began queuing before 09:00 to have their pets seen to.
By midday, GRSPCA senior inspector Salome Bruyns and animal welfare assistant trainee Kaylin Janklaas had vaccinated and dewormed about 60 animals and treated several that were unwell.
Meanwhile, HHS volunteers collected sick pets, handed out food and - with the enthusiastic help of local youngsters - dipped dogs to protect them against ticks and fleas.
Sterilisation has been the main focus of the two societies' efforts this year. The Hoekwil group goes from door to door to find animals that need neutering, and raises funds to pay for the operations, while the GRSPCA collects the animals, carries out the sterilisations, and returns them home.
"We are grateful to our friends at the SPCA and the PDSA for all their help this year," said HHS founder Laurell Pelser.
"We believe animal welfare groups should work together - because, although our methods may be different, we all have the same aim: to improve the quality of life for animals in our community."

HHS's next outreach will be with the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA), in Touwsranten on Wednesday 15 December. To follow and support them, visit their Facebook page, Hoekwil.Humane.Society.
