Ithemba Lobomi runs a children’s programme, ‘Transformative Leader in Me’, which is aimed at building children and growing their identity and self-esteem. According to Pastor Luthando Majoka, co-ordinator of the programme, they make use of ‘hero booking’, a psychosocial support method through which children draw, write stories and are involved in expressive art.
The adults being trained for the next six weeks are being prepared to work with this method. The training is provided by Phumeza Mdingi from Mad about Art in Knysna.
The trainees include 16 community family supporters, eight volunteers and four administrative staff.
More children
"Some 30 children are currently part of the Transformative Leader programme, but we want to extend our reach and get more children involved," said Majoka.
"We have already started carrying out door to door visits and contacted schools to help identify children that can be helped by the programme."
Ithemba Lobomi runs a Community Family Support Programme which focuses on social issues and provides emotional support and counselling to families.
They also offer a home-based care programme that provides health support services to chronic disease patients.
