GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The Competition Commission will be offering free workshops for milk producers in George and Tsitsikamma on Wednesday 30 October.
The workshop aims to provide information about buyer power provisions in the Competition Act 89 of 1998 (as amended) and competition regulation tools that are available to support small to medium enterprises (SME) and historically disadvantaged person (HDP) milk producers.
The workshops will take place from 09:30-13:00 at the Fynbos Golf & Country Estate in Tsitsikamma and Protea Hotel by Marriot King George, respectively.
Milk producers interested in attending the workshops should register online by no later than tomorrow, Tuesday 29 October.
Registration for the workshop in George can be done at https://tinyurl.com/rjr99r62 and Tsitsikamma registrations are available at https://tinyurl.com/wzrwe49s
The Commission’s Grocery Retail Market Inquiry and Concentration Study highlighted concentration issues within the milk industry, and therefore the Commission is engaging with milk producers to gain a deeper understanding of the industry and any competition issues that might be prevalent.
These workshops offer a platform for milk producers to engage directly with the Commission and learn about fair trading conditions when engaging with dominant buyers.
The attendees will also get to share more information about the barriers to entry and expansion they might be experiencing in the milk production industry.
“At these workshops, members of our Advocacy Division will also explain what buyer power provisions are and how this tool aims to empower SMEs," Principal Analyst Daniela Bove said.
Buyer power describes the purchasing power of a buyer to influence and secure an agreement on the terms of trade with a supplier(s).
"The buyer power provisions contained in the Competition Act 89 of 1998 (as amended) prohibits dominant firms in certain designated sectors from imposing unfair prices and/or other unfair trading conditions on SME or HDP suppliers," Bove explained.
