NATIONAL NEWS - With less than a month to go until the first heat of the Stance ISA World Adaptive Surfing Championships hits the water, the South African Adaptive Surfing Team have stepped up their efforts to help the nine team members make the long trip to La Jolla, California.
The Stance World Adaptive Surfing Champs 2016 takes place from December 8th and 12th.
This fundraising effort has received a boost with the news that two legends of South African surfing have thrown their support behind the team. Both Shaun Tomson and Jordy Smith will be using their vast social media networks to encourage their followers to donate to the crowdfunding site that has been set up for the team.(see details below)
After supporting the team at the inaugural World Adaptive Championships last year Tomson had this to say “ Watching the South African Adaptive Surfing Team in action is an inspiring experience.
These athletes have overcome daunting physical challenges through the power of personal will and Jordy Smith and I are honoured to be supporting them in their quest to get to the USA and compete in the ISA World Championships”.
Adaptive Surfing South Africa are challenging all surfers in South Africa to donate a minimum of 10 dollars each to the crowdfunding site that has been set up by Tomson and Smith.

The 2016 South African Adaptive surfing Team will be captained by 2015 silver medallist Antony Smyth for the second year in a row and includes Dries Millard, JP Veaudry, Erynn Geddie, Lesley Lee, Caleb Swanepoel and Ashtan Davids.Tasha Mentasti (Coach) and Bev Smyth (Manager) will travel with the team along with a number of support staff.
Surfing South Africa is the recognized governing body for the sport and is a member of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) and the International Surfing Association (ISA).
All South African surfing teams that participate in international events are chosen by the National Selectors and in terms of the SSA Constitution. All national teams are ratified by the Board of Directors of Surfing South Africa prior to being forwarded to SASCOC for colours approval.
