This event was preceded by a Match Racing Series competing for the Clive Davy Trophy.
In keeping with the customs of the Americas Cup, a Challenger Series was held on Saturday. In this series, seven teams sailed short match races on a round robin in order to select a challenger for the trophy held by David and Rory Laing, the defenders.
A good sailing breeze prevailed and the brightly coloured Gypsies of the Sailing School were used for the racing. After many races, the team of Evelyn Osborne and Nathan Page came out as the winner of the Challenger series, to sail against the Defenders on Sunday.
On Sunday a very light southerly did not make for very good sailing conditions. A best of 3 match racing series held between David Laing and Evelyn Osborne.
In the first race, aggressive tactics by the defender saw the challenger incurring three penalties in rapid succession. She was thus disqualified in terms of the racing rules and the first match was awarded to the defender.
The second match was more even - both boats made a good start and the challenger rounded the weather mark first.
However, on the run down to the leeward mark, the defender managed to pass to leeward, then to pull away to win.
With these two wins, the team of David and Rory Laing were declared the winners of the Clive Davy Trophy.
While this was taking place, a fun race around the dam for the other GLYC boats took place. This took the form of a Le Mans start in pursuit format, with the slower boats going first. First back was the Laser of Khaya Gould.
Thereafter the assembled fleet of 24 GLYC boats took part in the closing cruise Sail Past.
This took the form of the acting Commodore, Peter Eckford, taking the salute as the fleet, in line astern and led by rear commodore Malcolm Osborne on his Laser.
Also in attendance as invited guest and on the Committee Boat for the Sail Past was the Commodore of Knynsa Yacht Club, Chick Ramsay.
