GEORGE SAILING NEWS - Four boats in the senior fleet and six Optimists in the junior fleet tackled the fresh southeaster at the George Lake Yacht Club on Sunday.
As per forecast, the strength was about 13 knots with gusts up to 19 knots. Race officer Jeremy Dee set three races but not many were willing to take part in the third.
In the first race the Dart of Hans Delport was closely pursued by the Hobie 14 of Charles Norman, both reaching good speed in the conditions. Just behind was the Fireball of David Laing and Matthew de Villiers.
These three extended a big lead ahead of the Laser Radial of Malcolm Osborne and the Sonnet of Conrad and Ferdinand Holm.
Scored on class ratings, Osborne was the winner of this race, ahead of Holm and Laing.
In race two the wind picked up a little. Delport chose to sail slightly more conservatively and the Hobie 14 of Norman took line honours. The Fireball was delayed by a capsize and had to overtake to get back to third place on the water. The Sonnet really got going in this race, extending a lead ahead of the Laser.
Handicap race winner was Holm, ahead of Osborne and Laing. Norman and Osborne opted out of race three and the Fireball retired soon after starting, due to an equipment failure.
This left just the Sonnet and Dart in this race with team Holm the winners.
Most of the Optimists coped well in the strong wind, albeit with a couple of capsizes, but all also opted out of race three.
Malcolm Osborne is the overall winner of the Millenium Trophy for the 2018/2019 season. Osborne, using the smaller Radial sail, was the sole Laser during Sunday's racing.
Kyle Koeries mastered the conditions the best in race one and finished well ahead. Second place was taken by Tristan Boshoff. In race two Kyle again was the leader, but capsized just before the finish line.
A slow recovery allowed Thomas Lawa to catch up and overtake to take this race win.
The junior fleet was racing for the Toppies Trophy. Combined with the results from the first session in September, the overall winner for the 2018/2019 season is Kyle Koeries. The senior fleet was racing for the Millenium Trophy and the overall winner for the 2018/2019 season is Malcolm Osborne.
