Having missed out on the medals in the much-anticipated 200m butterfly final which was won by the man he famously beat in London four years ago, Michael Phelps, Le Clos is looking to the 100m butterfly to bring him that consolation.
The 24-year-old star booked his place in Friday’s final with the second fastest time of the night (51.43) in Thursday’s semifinals, finishing second only to Singapore’s Joseph Schooling (50.83). China’s Li Zhuhao (51.51) was third fastest, Hungarian Laszlo Cseh (51.57) fourth and Phelps (51.58) fifth.
The American had earlier in the evening powered his way to his fourth gold medal of these Games, and 22nd in total, in the 200m individual medley – making this the record fourth Olympics in which he’s won this event.
