The SA Rugby Union (SARU), SA National Defence Force (SANDF) and Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) are exploring the possibility of establishing a SANDF Rugby Academy at the Army Base in Oudtshoorn.
A total of 30 rugby players (male and female) will be considered for enrolment as from January 2012. These players will have access to fulltime coaches and fitness trainers.
The aim with the academy is to provide the opportunity for individuals to graduate as players, with the prospect of getting opportunities for skill and career development in one of the various sectors of the National Defence Force, namely the SA Navy, SA Army, SA Air Force and the SA H/Services. It will also serve as a retention strategy to allow for optimal development of players and human beings.
The minimum requirements for applicants are:
- players must have a Grade 12 qualification;
- should be between the ages of 18 and 22;
- the age limit for players with tertiary qualification is 26 years;
- applicants must have played in their school and/or club’s first team.
