GEORGE NEWS - Over the weekend of 15 to 17 October, the Western Cape Chess club championships took place at Wilderness Hotel.
Eden Chess Union was the host for this tournament. Clubs from the West Coast, Cape Town metro, Overberg and Eden were among the 32 teams that took part in this prestigious event. Teams consists of four players plus a reserve.
The clubs were divided into three sections: A (14 teams); B (10 teams); and C (8 teams).
After a hard battle, the defending champions in the A section were dethroned by the young team from Elsies River. The results were as follows:
A Section
- Winners - Elsiesrivier
- Second – joined between Steinitz A and Blackjacks A
B Section
- Winners - Steinitz B
- Second - Blackjack B
- Third - Steinitz C
C Section
- Winners - Mossel Bay B
- Second - Conville Knights B
- Third - Riversdale C
Eden Chess Union thanks all the players for their participation and everyone who helped to make a success of this tournament. A special word of thanks to Ryno Blignaut, the tournament director, the rest of the committee and every support staff member who made sure that a safe environment was maintained for the duration of the tournament and that all Covid-19 protocols were adhered to.
Also a big word of thanks to the chief arbiter Hans Ottervanger, deputy chief arbiter George Swart, assistant arbiters Anje Campbell (from Eden), Marc Petersen and Zaid Gabrials from Western Province for your dedication and hard work during the weekend.
