BOXING NEWS - Errol Spence Jr from Desoto, Texas, makes the first defence of his IBF welterweight belt when he meets Lamont Peterson of Washington DC at the Brooklyn Barclay Centre in New York on Saturday night.
The 28-year-old Spence (22-0; 19) won the belt in May last year in Sheffield when he stopped Britain’s Kell Brook in the 11th round.
Peterson, 33, a former IBF junior welterweight and WBA welterweight champion, who has a record of 35-3-1; 17 since making his pro debut in September 2004, goes into the fight as the underdog.
His most significant victory was in December 2011 when he beat Amir Khan on a split decision in a clash for the IBF and WBA junior welterweight belts.
Against the southpaw Peterson he faces his toughest opponent in recent years
The champion gained valuable experience, having sparred with Floyd Mayweather early in his career, and is on a nine-fight inside-the-distance run at present.
