GEORGE NEWS - The 2024 SA Masters Surfing Championships are set to take place this weekend at Victoria Bay, promising five full days of exhilarating surfing. This national event will showcase the country's finest masters surfers, competing across various divisions: Men's Over 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, and Women's Over 35.
Victoria Bay, known for its prime right-hand point break, is an ideal venue for this prestigious event.
The consistent waves and highly contestable conditions lend themselves to high-performance surfing, making it a favourite among competitive surfers nationwide.
Judges at the event will be on the lookout for surfers demonstrating commitment, degree of difficulty, innovative and progressive manoeuvres, a combination of major moves, variety, speed, power, and flow. The competition promises to be fierce, with a lineup of seasoned professionals, national champions, and international titleholders taking to the waves.
Notable competitors include David Weare, Greg Emslie, Sean Holmes, Noel Rahme, David Malherbe, Greg Swart, Andrew Carter, Grant Baker, Cass Collier, Lynne Mackey, and Tash Mentasti.
All participants in the SA Masters represent a significant segment of South Africa's surfing history. Many have achieved remarkable success both in the sport and within the surf industry. While some competitors approach the event with serious determination, others participate purely for the joy of the sport. Regardless of their motivations, each surfer contributes to the rich lineage, traditions, and culture of South African surfing.
These master surfers also serve as inspirations to younger generations, who look up to them as heroes and respected figures in the surfing community.
Competing for national titles in their respective age categories, they also vie for the prestigious Master's Cup, awarded to the winning district.
Districts participating in this year's event include Cape Town Surfriders, Cape Winelands Surfriders, Eden Surfriders, Nelson Mandela Bay Surfriders, Buffalo City Surfriders, Ugu, eThekweni, and Ilembe Surfriders. The coveted Dave Fish Trophy will be awarded to the most consistent surfer throughout the competition.
The SA Masters Championships, a Surfing South Africa event, is hosted by Eden Surfriders and supported by the Western Cape Government, George Tourism, Sea Harvest, the Eden Sport Council, and the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture.
