GEORGE NEWS - Although the girls hockey team of Outeniqua High School did not win the finals of the SPAR Eastern Cape Schoolgirls Hockey Challenge that took place at Collegiate High in Gqeberha the past weekend, they were named the most popular team by the organisers.
The team from Outeniqua High was one of five that participated in the tournament. The preliminary rounds in the annual challenge saw hundreds of schoolgirls compete in five regional tournaments around the Eastern and Southern Cape.
The teams participated in a round-robin system, with the top two qualifying for Sunday’s final.
Outeniqua played four matches of which they won one and lost three.
Kirk Mendoza, coach of the team, this afternoon (15 August) said it was a good experience and an eye-opener. "Unfortunately we ended in the fourth position."
He stressed that the team was competitive in the final tournament.
Outeniqua earlier won the Eden section and therefore qualified for the finals. The school will host the regional tournament again next year and will hopefully qualify for the finals.
The winners of the tournament were Collegiate, who beat Clarendon 2-1 in the final.
The regional champions that contested the provincial finals were Collegiate, Clarendon (champions in 2017), DSG, Outeniqua and Queenstown Girls’ High.
