Two sport codes controversially omitted from the 2022 Commonwealth Games schedule could still be included, but bid committee chief executive Tubby Reddy insists the funding for track cycling and gymnastics venues will not be extracted from the Games budget.
Track cycling is considered an “optional” code as defined by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), and Reddy said yesterday it was not viable to build and maintain a facility to host the competition at the Durban showpiece.
“The City of Durban has been very clear they don’t want a velodrome, but the International Cycling Union is pushing hard for it,” Reddy said.
