CHESS NEWS - Kayleigh Cornforth of Eden Chess is part of the SA chess team that proudly flew the South African flag at the 2025 African Schools Individual Chess Championship in Mombasa, Kenya, this week.
Kayleigh, Grade 7 learner at Holy Cross Primary School, played in the U13 girls' age group.
This prestigious tournament, which began last Friday, 23 May, and ran until this Wednesday, 28 May, featured top young chess talent from across the continent, including competitors from Uganda, Namibia, South Africa, Kenya and Zambia.
The championship consisted of nine intense rounds of play. The tournament follows a nine-round Swiss format, each player having 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game, plus a 30-second increment per move.
After the first five rounds, Kayleigh had already secured an impressive 3.5 points, demonstrating her chess prowess and resilience on the international stage.
