GEORGE NEWS AND VIDEO - A farmer has given local motocross riders access to a piece of land close to George Airport to build a motocross track and freestyle MX area.
With motocross riders in George often struggling to find suitable places to ride legally, this is a breakthrough for the community, who now have a venue they can call home.
The landowner asked David Goosen, a Cape Town-based motocross rider, to look at the potential of designing and building a track for himself, his son and friends, who are all passionate riders.
Working around the natural vegetation, flow and elevation of the land, a design was quickly agreed on and the team got to work. The result is a beautiful new location for riders to enjoy, with jumps, berms and flowing changes in elevation.
Goosen said the goal is to get more feet through the venue and, by charging a small fee per rider, to eventually have enough money to add onto the existing facilities. The immediate goals are to build on-site toilets and erect shade-cloth pit areas.
Rudolf Pretorius, a locally based freestyle motocross rider, is in charge of the facility and is very excited about what has been achieved in a little over a year.
"A tremendous amount of time and effort has gone into the park, and with the input and permission of the landowner, it has set us to the next level in South Africa . . . in Africa . . . in the sport of freestyle motocross.
"It's allowed us to take our game to the next level and compete at an international standard."
Spectators are welcome to visit the park and watch the riders in action. Saturdays are the best days, weather permitting. The facility is just off the R102 (Airport Road) near Hoogekraal.
