GEORGE NEWS - With most amateur sport activities still in limbo thanks to Covid-19, George Herald cornered Siphosethu "Senzo" Nyunyahat, one of the most talented young goalkeepers in the Eden region.
Nyunya, who hails from the street corners of Lawaaikamp, started to play for Black Cats Football Club's development side in 2012. Sipho "Itu" Jacobs, an experienced goalkeeper from Black Cats, took him under his wing and developed him into one of the best goalkeepers in the region.
The 18-year-old Grade 12 learner from Thembalethu High School played in quite a few tournaments for his school, most notably the u.19 Kay Motsepe Schools Cup tournament in Pretoria and the u.15 FNB Football First Development Programme at the Nike Sport Centre in Johannesburg.
Nyunya also featured in six cup tournaments for the "Ikati emnyama" senior team during his first season.
His biggest wish and dream is to play in the National Premier Soccer League's Elite league. Nyunya would also like to engage with stakeholders and George Municipality to develop local football.
Nyunya reckons one of the reasons why a lot of rising young football stars end up doing crime is because there is no proper infrastructure in the townships and insufficient sporting amenities to keep the youngsters occupied. "Government needs to take control," he says.
