GEORGE FOOTBALL NEWS - A George team won the finals of the First National Bank (FNB) Football First Programme on Saturday 21 July.
Football clubs from across the Eden region selected their best to participate in this year's football festival, which took place at the Lawaaikamp stadium.
The programme, which was founded as a legacy project following FNB's involvement in the 2010 Fifa World Cup, develops the football skills of boys and girls under 15 across the country.
Young players are trained by coaches who are selected in collaboration with the South African Football Association (Safa) and they undergo annual refresher courses to maintain and develop their football skills.
Now in its seventh year, it has attracted more than 30 000 young football players from 39 schools across the country. More than 25 of South Africa's young football stars have come through the FNB Football First Programme and were scouted by prominent clubs.
Some are now playing professional South African football.
