SOCCER NEWS - Fast Eleven FC suffered a 2-1 defeat to the Oudtshoorn Military Base in their Safa Eden Regional League clash at the Lawaaikamp Stadium on Sunday afternoon, 24 May.
Battling to improve their position on the league table, the George outfit faced a determined Infantry School side.
The match started off with frenetic energy. Luxolo Nyala and Tsepo Matsie led the early attacks. A free kick, however, sailed narrowly over the crossbar.
Both teams created opportunities in an evenly contested first half, but neither side could find the breakthrough before the interval.
Fast Eleven returned with greater urgency after the restart, playing attractive passing football through midfield. However, it was the home side that struck first when captain Sihle Mafukula powered in a header from a corner kick to make it 1-0.
The visitors responded strongly as Samkelo Saliwe levelled matters with a powerful finish from the right flank. Gaining confidence, the Oudtshoorn side continued to press forward and eventually took the lead when Nyala fired a superb left-footed strike past goalkeeper Mihlali Siko.
Fast Eleven’s hopes of a comeback were dealt a further blow when Mafukula was sent off, reducing the hosts to 10 men. Sizakhe Ngcongolo nearly rescued a point late on, but his effort struck the woodwork.
The result leaves Fast Eleven seventh on the table with 41 points from 28 matches, while Infantry School remains 10th on 38 points.
