GEORGE CRICKET NEWS - The SWD cricket team continued their forward march when they defeated the highly rated visitors from Pretoria and fellow log leaders in Pool B, Northerns, by 28 runs in a Cricket SA Provincial One Day Competition match that was played at the REC in Oudtshoorn on Sunday.
Before this match, both teams were unbeaten after three matches. SWD, who were put in to bat, posted 271/7 thanks to a third wicket partnership of 163 runs between Jean du Plessis - who was run out on 99 (112 balls; 3x6 and 5x4) - and Obus Pienaar (63; 64 balls, 1x6, 6x4).
They set a new SWD record for a third wicket partnership in one day cricket. The previous one of 145 was held by Andrea Agathagelou and Neil Hornbuckle against Namibia (2016/17). Northerns responded with 243 all out and although the ground fielding of the home team was inconsistent, two critical run outs secured an SWD victory: danger men Andrea Agathagelou by Jean du Plessis and Leus du Plooy, who added 53, by Marcello Piedt. The SWD victory took them to the top of the points table in Pool B.
For SWD Marcello Piedt (2/38), Hershell America (2/41) and Tsepo Ndwandwa were the pick of the bowlers.
SWD's next assignment will be against Northern Cape at the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn this weekend.
The three-day match will be played from Thursday to Saturday, 29 November to 1 December, and the one day match on Sunday 2 December.
Summarised score card:
SWD 271/7 (Neil Hornbuckle 42, Jean du Plessis 99, Obus Pienaar 63, Luvuyo Nkese 4/45). NORTHERNS 243 (Rubin Herman 57, Leus du Plooy 53, Marcello Piedt 2/38, Hershell America 2/41, Tsepo Ndwandwa 3/62).
