SOUTHERN CAPE NEWS - SWD cricket's trophy aspirations suffered a major setback when they lost both the three and one-day matches against Western Province in Cape Town last weekend.
In the three-day match SWD was outplayed by the home team. They suffered a 119 runs defeat after the WP posted 329/7 (declared) in the first innings and dismissed SWD for 212 leaving them with a 117 run deficit.
Neil Hornbuckle (105; 115 balls, 17x4), however, made a huge statement with the bat as he scored his second century of the season. Western Province declared their second innings at stumps on the second day at 217/3 setting SWD a target of 335 for victory. Brendon Louw added 74 runs in SWD’s second innings of 215 as they remain bottom in Pool A.
The limited over match was an even bigger disappointment. Western Province, who batted first, was in big trouble at 98/6 (after 30 overs) but they clawed their way back and were dismissed in the last over for 199. SWD had a dream start and with their score at 82/1 (in the 12th over) they looked set for a bonus point victory before a batting collapse. They were bowled out for 120 runs and lost by 69 runs.
