GEORGE NEWS - George Preparatory School marked its 75th birthday on 28 April, the school's 75th day of the academic year, with some cake, candles and a special homecoming.
The Garden Route District's mayor, Marais Kruger, returned to the school where he once walked the same corridors, proudly describing himself as a Voorie.
His visit served as a powerful reminder of the role the school continues to play in shaping future leaders.
In his address to the learners, Kruger shared a simple but meaningful message: trust in God's plan, value the support of your parents and teachers, and never stop dreaming. Reflecting on his own journey, he reminded the learners that dreams may change over time, but should never be abandoned.
The celebration also offered a moment to reflect on the school's rich history.
George Preparatory opened its doors in January 1951 under its first principal, Mr J Ferreira, with just 12 educators and 401 learners. It was very much a community effort, with the other local schools contributing to help get the new school off the ground.

Over the years, a strong line of leadership guided its growth. Ferreira served for 29 years, followed by Mr A van Zyl (1973-1986) and Mr WG du Toit (1987-2012).
During Du Toit's tenure, the school expanded significantly; learner numbers grew from 350 to 700, staff increased, Grade R classes were introduced, and key facilities such as classrooms, a library, a hall and a tuck shop were built.
He was succeeded by Mr AD Roux (2012-2018), who dedicated 40 years to the school, before Lokkie Fourie made history as the school's first female principal from 2019 to 2023.
Today, under the leadership of Linda Jordaan, who has been part of the school since 1991, George Preparatory continues to thrive.
From humble beginnings to a school of more than 800 learners today, George Preparatory remains rooted in community, tradition and growth, a place where, as Kruger reminded the learners, dreams are nurtured and futures are shaped.
