Pledge against corruption

GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - South Africa is in real danger to follow a pattern where corruption is becoming the norm. So said Deputy Mayor Charlotte Clarke during her address to representatives of various government departments during an anti corruption campaign in George.

The event was held last Friday at the Unity Park as an initiative of the Government Communication and Information Systems. It was attended by public servants, politicians, senior government officials from the Department of Justice, Home Affairs, Correctional Services, George Municipality, South African Police Services, George Business Chamber and the Garden Route District Municipality. All present signed a pledge against corruption.

"This event is absolutely necessary, because today corruption is seen as the norm," said Clarke. She referred to the "state capture" scenario where people use public funds to enrich themselves. "The whole community must express their disdain against corruption."

Cluster Commander of the Eden Policing District, Oswald Reddy, said corrupt individuals can run, but they can't hide. "We will find them," said Reddy. He explained the different forms in which corruption manifest itself. "I believe we can and will win the fight against corruption if we can adopt a zero tolerance approach against any form of corruption."

Xolelwa Vumazonke of Correctional Services in Thembalethu proudly joined the awareness campaign against corruption.
