Update
GEORGE NEWS - One of the five accused in the War on Waste case, Wessel Robertson, was recently sanctioned with a final written warning valid for twelve months following an internal disciplinary hearing by his employer, George Municipality.
Robertson manages the cleaning division at the municipality and has been in its employment throughout the entire War on Waste saga, which culminated in Robertson, along with four other accused, being served with court summonses in September 2020.
Robertson, former municipal manager Trevor Botha, former director of community services Walter Hendricks (currently acting MM at Oudtshoorn Municipality), former George mayor Melvin Naik and a former EPWP worker, Rowan Botha, were charged with fraud, corruption and contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act.
The charges relate to Naik's mayoral project, War on Waste.
The five accused made a quick appear-ance in the George Regional Court on Thursday 2 June.
The next court date is Thursday 28 July, when a date will in all likelihood be established for the start of the long-awaited hearing.
Asked for comment on Robertson's sanction, municipal spokesperson Chantèl Edwards said the municipality does not comment on internal staff-related matters. Edwards confirmed that Robertson will not provide any comment either.
