GEORGE NEWS - The five accused in the War on Waste case were due to make a second appearance in the George Magistrate’s Court today, 10 December.
However, the court has been closed for today and tomorrow due to Covid-19 measures. The case has been postponed until 16 March 2021.
Former municipal manager Trevor Botha, former director of community services Walter Hendricks and the former George mayor, Melvin Naik had to wait patiently at the Caltex Garage in Courtenay Street to receive an update from their attorneys.
The other two accused in the matter, Wessel Robertson and Rowan Botha, are officials of George Municipality.
The five stand accused of fraud, corruption and contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act. The charges relate to Naik's mayoral project, War on Waste.
Botha, Naik and Hendricks have previously proclaimed their innocence in the matter.
Trevor Botha and Walter Hendricks are represented by their attorney Nico Smit, and the attorney Winston Jansen represents Melvin Naik, Wessel Robertson and Rowan Botha. Adv Xolile Jonas is representing the state.
