WESTERN CAPE NEWS - The DA in the Western Cape will elect an interim leader later this month.
DA provincial chairperson for the Western Cape Jaco Londt said in a statement that the DA's Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) for the Western Cape has started the process to elect an interim leader after the resignation of Bonginkosi Madikizela.
A call for nominations will go out later today, 5 May, for the election which will take place on 29 May at the DA Western Cape's provincial council meeting.
“We referred the matter to the party’s Federal Legal Commission (FLC) who, after studying both the federal and provincial constitutions, confirmed that our original understanding to proceed with the election of the Western Cape interim leader was correct,” said Londt.
According to the federal and provincial constitutions, a provincial leader can only be elected at a provincial congress. Therefore, the leader elected on 29 May 2021 at the provincial council meeting will act as interim leader until the next provincial congress.
