Many South Africans have accused Zapiro of being racist.
But the cartoonist say he has never intended to create hurtful images that may be viewed as racist.
He says he is confused by the public outrage, adding that while he has drawn similar cartoons before,, they were never heavily criticised.
He says he will review his methods following the backlash over his latest work.
“If the negative associations and connotations is more powerful and is doing more damage than the positive of the political message that I’m trying to get across, then it’s a mistake and I will definitely reassess.”
