Post Office warns against scam

NATIONAL NEWS - The SA Post Office has become aware of a scam designed to convince members of the public to pay money into the account of fraudsters.

Members of the public receive an SMS message stating that a parcel addressed to them is being retained because customs fees on it are outstanding. The notice asks them to click on a link which leads them to a website where they can enter their credit card details to make a payment ‘and release the parcel’.

The SMS includes a fraudulent parcel number not issued by the post office.

Members of the public who receive the notice should delete it immediately and report this on the post office's toll-free crime buster hotline.

The post office does not require the payment of any fees before the time of collection. If there are customs fees payable on a parcel from abroad, the client pays the fees when they collect the parcel.
