WESTERN CAPE NEWS - The Western Cape Mobility Department is calling on e-hailing and metered taxi operators across the province to register to vote and nominate candidates for the first election of the E-hailing and Metered Taxi Council - Western Cape (EMTC-WC).
Registration and nominations close today, Thursday 22 October. The election will establish the first representative leadership structure for an industry comprising approximately 3 500 operators across the Western Cape.
The council aims to provide operators with a collective voice and a formal platform to raise concerns affecting their businesses and the broader industry. These include operating licences and compliance, working conditions, concerns relating to e-hailing platforms and other sector-related challenges.
The council is intended to represent operators in both metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas, ensuring that the interests of the industry are heard across the province, according to a statement by the Western Cape Mobility Department on Tuesday 13 October.
Muneera Allie, head of the department’s communication, said the initiative formed part of October Mobility Month, which recognises the people and services that keep the province moving.
Allie encouraged all eligible operators to register, participate in the election and help shape the industry’s future representation.
According to the statement, the department is facilitating the election process but will not select candidates, campaign for individuals or influence the outcome. Its responsibilities include supporting registration, verifying operating licence information and coordinating the election.
