Police Minister Fikile Mbalula announced on Thursday that Phahlane’s term as acting National Police Commissioner had come to an end and that he is considering placing him on suspension.
President Jacob Zuma has appointed Lieutenant-General Lesetja Mothiba to act as the national commissioner.
New acting commissioner Mothiba, a career cop, is viewed as a committed policeman who is untainted by political scandal.
In a statement, Phahlane says he had constructive engagement with Mbalula in which he agreed to step down from his position as acting commissioner with immediate effect.
