According to Autocar, Bram Schot, who replaced axed and ultimately jailed former Chairman Rupert Stadler in December last year, is reportedly in favour of the next generation TT, out next year, going the four-door route, that will effectively pit it against the Mercedes-Benz CLA and the upcoming BMW 2-series Gran Coupe.
The publication’s claims therefore contradicts those made in November by Peter Oberndorfer, who remarked that while a four-door TT was being planned, it was ultimately scrapped.
“I think the TT is an icon, and to do a family [car] out of that is quite difficult. And especially in these times where we have to concentrate more and more, because we have to do gasoline and diesels on the one side, and electrification on the other side,” Oberndorfer, a former competitor and winner in the DTM series, told Australia’s caradvice.com.au at the unveiling of the new A1.
“So you have to concentrate more and more and think about what you can do and what you can afford. So we’re quite happy with one TT at the moment. Where the recent stories came from, I don’t know. I don’t know about a four-door TT”.
If indeed proven to be accurate, the revised TT RS unveiled earlier this week would therefore rate as the swansong for both the coupe and Roadster bodystyles, and possibly also the 294kW 2.5 TFSI motor in favour of a likely a plug-in hybrid setup. At present though, this remains to be confirmed.
