Whereas previous generation Zafiras sported a compact MPV design and rode on the same platform as the Astra, the newcomer seemingly replaces higher end versions of the Vivaro van and comes underpinned by parent company’s PSA’s EMP2 architecture, with restyled looks to differentiate itself from the Citroën Spacetourer, Peugeot Traveller and Toyota ProAce Verso sold in Europe.
Available in three body lengths; 4.6m, 4.9m and 5.3m, the Life provides seating for five, six, seven or eight depending on the selected configuration, with boot space ranging from as low as 1 500-litres to 4 500-litres again based on length and seat layout. On long wheelbase models, the Life will offer a so-called Lounge trim featuring foldaway rear trays, a 230-volt power socket, more storage areas, heated and massaging front leather seats and four movable rear chairs with 48cm wide cushions.
Based on the model and trim level, spec inside consists of a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and satellite navigation, a premium 10-speaker sound system and on the safety side, Lane Keep Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, High Beam Assist, a class exclusive colour Heads-Up Display, Intelligent Cruise Control and a 180 camera system.
Although Opel didn’t disclose any technical details, the Zafira Life will likely mirror the options available in the Spacetourer, Traveller and ProAce, namely a 1.5 BlueHDI developing between 74kW and 88kW, a 1.6 BlueHDI making from 70kW to 88kW and a 2.0 BlueHDI producing 90kW to 130kW.
Transmission choices will consist of a five or six-speed manual, though some models will have the option of a six-speed automatic. As evident by the provided images however, top-spec variants will come standard with an eight-speed automatic controlled via a rotary dial. A Dangel developed four-wheel drive system will be offered on same models at launch, while an all-electric version will be added in 2021.
Despite Opel South Africa having recently confirmed that the Vivaro would debut in December this year, the Zafira Life remains an unknown local market entity.
