SOUTHERN CAPE NEWS - The Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) has announced in Pretoria that it has started phase two of a safety recall for all Kuga 1,6 models affected by a possible fire hazard.
This second phase is to mitigate the risk of engine fire resulting from a cracked cylinder head caused by a loss of coolant and applies to all Kuga 1,6 models built at the Valencia assembly plant in Spain between 8 May 2012 and 27 September 2014.
"Our customers are our top priority and their safety is of the utmost importance to us," says Casper Kruger, new managing director of FMCSA. "Our global engineering team has finalised the second stage of the recall. South Africa is the first market to receive parts and implement the second phase of the recall."
New hardware will be installed, comprising a new coolant expansion tank with a sensor that monitors the level of the vehicle's coolant to prevent overheating. The system will now warn the driver well in advance if there is a risk of overheating due to insufficient coolant.
The vehicle's updated software has the ability to reduce engine power and notify the driver to stop driving if coolant levels drop below the minimum required level.
Changes will be made to the routing of coolant pipes. An electrical harness is fitted, as well as software to monitor a new coolant level sensor. Additionally, a coolant pipe will also be replaced for added robustness and durability.
Customers are asked to schedule an appointment with their dealer to ensure the recall action is quick and efficient. Should the customer wish, their dealer will also pre-arrange alternative transport upon scheduling an appointment.
All Kuga models now benefit from the Ford Kuga PremiumCare Extended Plan, backed by FMCSA. It provides cover beyond the new vehicle warranty and covers the repair of more than 1 000 vehicle components up to a maximum of six years or 200 000km, whichever comes first.
Ford Roadside Assistance is also available to all Kuga owners, beyond the standard cover. Supported through the AA, this service is available 24/7 on 0861 150 250.
