A regular top-seller with over 100 000 units sold in India since its debut, the updates applied to the Baleno are minor and consists of a new front bumper, a revised grille, new projector-type headlights with daytime running LEDs on top-spec models and a reshaped low front air intake. No changes have taken place at the rear.

Inside, all model are outfitted with a two-tone black/blue finish, though higher-spec version are equipped with a Harman developed seven-inch SmartPlay Sound touchscreen infotainment that brings voice recognition, satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and which serves as the display for the reverse camera. All models are additionally fitted as standard with rear parking sensors.

In terms of models, the Baleno will be offered in four trim levels; Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha with power coming from the normally aspirated 1.2-litre K12M petrol engine that develops 62kW/115Nm, or the Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre DDiS badged Multijet turbodiesel that outputs 55kW/190Nm. A five-speed manual gearbox is again standard on all models with a CVT optional on the petrol. Capping the range off is the sporty RS which uses a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged Boosterjet engine that makes 75kW/150Nm, mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.

While Suzuki Auto South Africa has already confirmed that its other Maruti sourced models, the new Ertiga and updated Ciaz will be offered this year, no word has yet been made on Baleno, although if approved, expect it to continue with the current model’s 1.4-litre engine that makes 68kW/130Nm, and with the option of a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic ‘box.
