The event started in Bedfordview and ended at The Fat Olive restaurant near Lanseria. I’ve attended many of these events in the past, however, when I arrived at the starting point, I realised just how big these events have become.
What is the event about?
If there is one thing about these sort of runs, it is the fact that they tend to start extremely early in the morning. The meeting time was 7 am, on a Sunday. Anyway, when I got to the starting point, I was taken back by the sheer number of people and cars already present.
What makes these get-togethers so humbling is the fact that cars range from small hot hatchbacks such as the Suzuki Swift Sport, right up to the latest from Lamborghini along with a number of BMW and Volkswagen Golf models thrown into the mix. The support for the event and the culture also struck me.
Various other car clubs attended, many of which I passed on the way to the meeting point. Once there, they all grouped together, showing off their cars, and show off they did. You see, many of these events attract a flurry of social media savvy car enthusiasts.
Wheels of choice
I, therefore, decided to attend in a car that also attracted a good helping of attention and smartphone camera clicks, a Vegas Yellow Audi TT RS on test at the time.
The little Audi sat amongst some greats in the form of V12 Aston Martins, twin-turbo Mercedes-AMGs and even a Lamborghini Huracan Performante. There was also a host of highly tuned Nissan GT-R’s and a variety of BMW M4’s. This little Audi, however, packs a mean punch thanks to its 2.5-litre five-cylinder 294kW/480Nm turbo-charged engine.
Starting off
I love these events because it gives one the opportunity to socialise with like-minded people. I got to talk to various people about their cars and their passion. It’s amazing to see so many people in one place all sharing the same interest.
We left the venue at 7:30 with our multi-million rand convoy consisting of around 300 cars. We headed out towards our breakfast destination. I, along with a few other motoring scribes that attended, decided to break off from the main convoy and take our own route.
There is something really special about driving with some of your closest friends who share the same interest, the love for cars, community and food. In the TT RS, there was no issue keeping up with some of the more supercar-like machines in our now separate convoy. It also sounds fantastic and out on the twisty bits, it feels light, planted and thanks to the quattro all-wheel drive system, it has loads of grip
Staying in touch
After our late breakfast, we said our goodbyes and headed our separate ways, but not before agreeing that we would definitely do a similar event at some stage.
