GEORGE NEWS - The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Wilderness and emergency services conducted an extensive search for a 20-year-old George man who was reported missing after some waves had swept him off the rocks as he was fishing along the coastline with some friends between Victoria Bay and Herolds Bay.
One of the group alerted some nearby residents, who raised the alarm.
According to Jonathan Britton, NSRI Wilderness’ station commander, the incident was reported at 12:49 on Tuesday 23 June. The rescue swimmers went out to the scene while the rescue craft, V’s Rescuer, was launched from Herolds Bay.
The search operation involved the NSRI, the police, George Fire and Rescue Services, ER24, Western Cape Government Health EMS, the police’s Water Policing and Diving Services (WPDS), and an EMS drone unit.
Despite an extensive sea, air and shoreline search, no trace of the man has been found.
The police have opened an investigation, and the WPDS divers are continuing the search efforts.
