GEORGE NEWS - The family of the late Fikile Jackson Bozwana from Lawaaikamp were shocked to find out that, after their father's death in 2022, they will not automatically move into his spot on the waiting list for a housing opportunity.
An enquiry about the matter revealed some important information for those in a similar situation.
George Municipality confirmed that the late Mr Bozwana applied in 2006 to be captured on the Western Cape Housing Demand Database.
"The deceased was therefore only on the waiting list and had not yet been considered for a housing opportunity based on the selection criteria," says spokesperson Chantèl Edwards.
"If the late individual had been approved in a housing project and a contract had been signed by the deceased, the house would then become a part of the estate and on completion of the top structure, the house would have been handed over to the family."
However, it does not apply if the application had not been approved. "According to the criteria of the Western Cape Government, the application (ie, the spot on the waiting list) must be cancelled, and cannot be allocated or transferred to a family member or anyone else," said Edwards.
