GEORGE NEWS - As newly appointed members of the George Film Commission, twin brothers De Wet and Rudolf du Toit joined the Garden Route Film Office after relocating from Cape Town to George.
After six years on film sets in Cape Town, local Tarzan actor De Wet and his brother Rudolf decided to make a bold move to leave Cape Town and return to their home town to establish their own film production company called Twin Oak Films.
"Two main factors influenced our decision to relocate. One is that after gaining so much experience in the film industry, by working on international film productions from the USA and from all over the world and in various film departments, we now have the desire to co-produce our own film projects," says Rudolf.
He says the other factor is that apart from the future Sallywood Film Studios, the existing film industry, though rising, is relatively small. This allows for a gap in the market.
"A content-producing film industry is needed in this area. The great news is that the Garden Route district has some of the best locations for film. All these locations are accessible and closely situated, which makes this region an ideal hotspot for filmmakers."
With new Tarzan film projects still lined up for the future, the Du Toit brothers' main aim currently is to establish and uplift the film industry in the greater Garden Route area by collaborating with the George Municipality, George Film Office and the Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda).
"At Twin Oak Films we have numerous film projects under development, ready to be filmed, especially in the Garden Route and surrounding areas to market the area as a rewarding film location as well as generating local jobs by giving access to local communities to develop local talent."
During the past few weeks the twins have already begun making contact with local role players by meeting with the Business Chamber, The Media Box, and the chairperson of the Garden Route Film Office, Philip de Vries.
"We strongly believe, as the African proverb says, 'If you want to go quick, go alone. If you want to go far, go together'," says Rudolph.
