GEORGE NEWS - The Tuiniqua Care Centre has recently launched a programme, 'Adopt a Grandparent', to share the challenges faced by their elderly residents and to seek public support.
Some of the residents have called Tuiniqua their home for more than 20 years. Currently, 70% of the residents in the independent housing units are over the age of 80.
"Over the past two decades, pension increases have not kept up with the rising cost of living. Our elderly residents face significant challenges in preparing meals for themselves and affording their rent.
"Some of our residents have limited funds, and their financial resources are extremely constrained. To make matters worse, subsidies from the Department of Social Development have significantly decreased, further limiting our ability to meet basic needs," says the centre manager, Alani Voigt.
"We kindly ask for the public's support to assist our elderly residents. Whether through financial contributions, donations of goods, or your time, any help you can provide will make a tremendous difference in their lives.
"Together, we can ensure that our elderly residents continue to receive the care and support they deserve," says Voigt.
If anyone wishes to make a financial contribution, it is tax-deductible, and Tuiniqua can issue an 18A tax certificate to the donor.
There are three options of support in the programme:
Option 1: Financial support.
A monthly or annual financial contribution for a grandma or grandpa. Your generosity will help enhance their quality of life, providing them with comfort and care.
Option 2: Gift of toiletries to a grandma or grandpa.
Donating toiletries to an elderly person ensures they have essential personal care items, promoting hygiene, dignity, and comfort in their daily lives.
Option 3: Be a companion and become a weekly companion to a grandma or grandpa.
Share your time, stories, and a listening ear, making a meaningful difference in their lives.
Voigt says they foresee that the public's participation in the programme can create lasting bonds and cherished memories.
"Your involvement can bring joy, love and much-needed companionship to our elderly residents."
