GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The management and staff of the Knysna Elephant Park are reeling from the devastating loss of a colleague and friend following a tragic accident on Saturday 16 October.
The trusted elephant guide and guardian, Shepherd Chuma, lost his life in an elephant-related incident while the guides were returning a group of elephants to their night camp after a day spent foraging in a free-roaming camp.
Saturday's severe weather conditions are thought to have been a contributing factor to the elephant's unprecedented behaviour, the park said in a statement on Monday 18 October.
Chuma, a dedicated Knysna Elephant Park employee for over 10 years, was a favourite among the elephants and was loved and respected by his colleagues and friends. Many a guest and volunteer will remember him for his friendly demeanour and his radiant, ever-present smile.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Prisca, his children, extended family, and friends. We will treasure our memories of him for many years to come," the park said.
Shepherd Chuma was a beloved elephant guide and guardian.
