GEORGE NEWS - George police opened an attempted murder docket after a municipal traffic officer was allegedly hit by a Toyota Quantum minibus taxi in Laing Street earlier today, Saturday 13 May.
The taxi driver fled the scene and the taxi was later found abandoned at the Sasol garage in Nelson Mandela Boulevard.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies, police responded to the scene at about 12:15.
"Upon arrival the members found the victim with multiple injuries. She was taken to hospital for further medical care. A search for the Quantum ensued and the vehicle was found abandoned at the Sasol garage in Nelson Mandela Boulevard," he said.
No arrests have been made and the vehicle was taken for forensic investigation.
Municipality confirms
George Municipality confirmed the incident and said the officer was allegedly hit by the taxi while she was on duty.
Communications officer for the municipality Debra Sauer, said the officer was taken to Mediclinic George for treatment and the case is being handled by the police.
The extent of the officer's injuries could not yet be confirmed.
Update: According to a source close to George Herald, the suspect was arrested in Thembalethu. This could however not yet be confirmed with the police.
