GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - It is Toy Run time again. This charity event was started in 1982 by the Italian Motorcycle Club and 35 years later it has grown into the biggest biker day "jol" in South Africa, which will take place on Sunday 26 November this year.
All over the country, gazillions of all sorts of bikers and bikes will carry toys to hundreds of venues.
The bikers and friends are along for the ride, but this day, underprivileged children and toys are the most important.
The toys are strapped and tied to bikes and bikers, and there are educational toys and some toiletries in the backpack.
The joy of an underprivileged child happily clutching a toy, is really why all this happens.
The joy of giving also relates here. So, give a useful gift.
The organisers and others suggest educational toys, toiletries, stationery and school bags, sports items and children's clothes.
Your toy is your entry fee to the venue, where there will be music, food stalls, raffles, games and competitions with bar facilities and a play area for kiddies.
The two main events are in Cape Town and Johannesburg, where thousands of bikers participate in this worthy cause.
Here on the Garden Route, November 26, it is happening in Mossel Bay at the Correctional Services' lapa.
Take the N2 turnoff, Louis Fourie Drive at the casino sign.
In the Garden Route area everyone is gathering at various times and places.
Some will go directly to the venue, but the majority will head toward Checkers Heiderand in Mossel Bay where the mass ride will get going at 11.00.
In Plettenberg Bay, Toy Runners will gather at the Shell garage to depart at 8.00 toward the Caltex garage on Knysna Waterfront.
All the bikers who gather at the Waterfront leave at 8:30 for Mossel Bay.
Sedgefield bikers meet at the Engen garage and depart at 9:00, hopefully to join the Knysna bikers as they pass there. – Staff reporter
