GEORGE NEWS - The third Covid-19 related death in George was officially confirmed this afternoon.
The victim died yesterday, Friday 5 June, as a patient in the intensive care unit at Mediclinic George.
Hospital Manager Kassie Karstens said the deceased received treatment in ICU for over a week.
"Currently we have two more patients with Covid-19 in the ICU who are receiving treatment,” said Karstens.
Nadia Ferreira, spokesperson for the Western Cape Department of Health, confirmed the new total of six Covid-related deaths for the Garden Route district. The breakdown is as follows: George (3), Mossel Bay (1), Hessequa (1) and Knysna (1).
The official update (as of 13:00 today) for the Western Cape totals 699 Covid-19 related deaths, with an increase of 272 Covid-19 related deaths since last week Saturday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the province is 29 136, with a total of 17 366 recoveries. Compared to last Saturday’s figures, the amount of confirmed cases in the province has increased with 9 676.

- George: 102 cases, 48 recovered
- Knysna: 68 cases, 44 recovered
- Bitou: 15 cases, 14 recovered
- Mossel Bay: 33 cases, 27 recovered
- Oudtshoorn: 15 cases, 5 recovered
- Hessequa: 14 cases, 10 recovered
- Kannaland: 1 case, 1 recovered
