GEORGE NEWS - Seven suspects will appear in the Thembalethu Magistrate’s court tomorrow, Friday 14 July, after they were arrested during the illegal protest that took place in Thembalethu on Wednesday 12 July.
According to Thembalethu Police communication officer, Captain Dumile Gwavu, the suspects, all of them men aged between 20 and 30, were arrested for public violence and malicious damage to property.
During the protest several vehicles, three of them police vehicles, were damaged when protesters threw stones at them. The protesters blocked the entrance to Thembalethu throwing stones and burning tyres.
The police used stun grenades, tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. “Nine cases of malicious damage to property and public violence have been opened. Two vehicles belonging to Municipality and MSEC security were completely burned," said Gwavu.
"It is believed that the protest was related to housing problems. The police condemn the damage of property in the strongest terms. More arrests may follow as the investigation continues,” said Gwavu.
