GEORGE NEWS - A 16-year-old boy recently appeared in the George Magistrate's Court for the murder of a 15-year-old boy between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, 10 and 11 February.
Sinovuyo Betsha (15) from Lawaaikamp was attacked by a group of young boys with pangas in Dick Street in Zone 9.
They robbed his Adidas sneakers and K-way hoody. He sustained serious injuries on his upper body and died in the George Hospital on 14 February.
A 16-year-old suspect was arrested for the murder and is currently kept at Bosasa youth development centre in Cape Town.
This is the second such incident in Thembalethu in less than three months, after a teenage girl was arrested for the murder of 15-year-old boy in December.
On 8 October 2017 another 16-year-old boy was arrested in Thembalethu following the murder of an 18-year-old boy.
This incident was also attributed to the ongoing voilence among teens in Thembalethu.
Captain Dumile Gwavu, Thembalethu Police communications officer, said the police are concerned about young people who get into fights using dangerous weapons.
Thembalethu residents have also raised their concerns over the issue of violence among teenagers and some have called for security guards to be deployed at schools to prevent pupils harming each other.
