GEORGE NEWS AND VIDEO - York Street is closed off from York Street Boulevard (Checkers) to the GO GEORGE bus depot as taxi drivers are parking their vehicles in the middle of the road.
According to unconfirmed reports, the taxi drivers are angry that 21 of their vehicles were impounded this morning.
This follows after the taxi strike against impoundments took place this week.
The strike was expected to end today pending a decision to establish a joint committee consisting of members of the George Municipal Council and the taxi industry within the next seven days to deal with outstanding matters.
This was discussed in yesterday's meeting.
All GO GEORGE services are suspended with immediate effect and all buses pulled off the roads until further notice.
Cradock, Market and Hibernia Streets are also closed. George traffic officials are on the scenes to divert traffic.
According to one taxi owner, George Municipality agreed yesterday that all taxis would receive a grace period of 7 days. He says they brought the protest into town because they know that the police won't shoot so easily. "If they stay in Thembalethu", he said, "it doesn't help and they endanger themselves."
More information to follow as it becomes available.
