GEORGE NEWS - Canticum Novum, a Stellenbosch-based a cappella Christian choir, will be giving a free concert in George on Wednesday 17 July.
The choir is touring through the beautiful South Cape and giving a series of free performances.
The group, affiliated with the Mother Church in Stellenbosch under the baton of Yolanda Botha, is a concert choir that performs throughout the year and annually performs a major choir and orchestra work as part of the Endler Concert Series.
One of the oldest church choirs in South Africa - celebrating their 60th anniversary in 2019 - Canticum Novum exclusively sings religious works and consists mostly of students and young adults.
They also have a passion for the Gospel and outreach. Therefore the name and motto: Cantate Domino Canticum Novum - Sing to the Lord a new song. This year's a cappella repertoire includes works spanning many centuries and genres including Renaissance motets, Irish hymns, meditatively sung Taizé songs and traditional African hymns.
The conductor, Yolanda Botha, is an organist, teacher, conductor, music director of the NPO Musica Dei and a former George resident. "We as a choir are privileged and excited to spend time in towns such as Mossel Bay, George and Sedgefield and hope the message of hope we present as part of our outreach will make a positive impact on the audiences we perform for," she says.
Where the church organ allows, the programme will be supplemented with a few organ arrangements, performed by Botha.
While in the area, Canticum Novum will also give performances at institutions such as the Night Shelter in George, Môreson Children's Home and various other institutions.
